Winter 2020 Free MPA Workshops
Students show up for the MPA workshops in the rooms given below. There is no need to Register for the workshops ahead of time; just show up.
CAPSTONE Preparation Workshop:
Date: January 9th. Thursday
Room: NB 1.100
Time: 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

These workshops are for students who have failed the MPAQE when taken in PAD 700, and also for students who need to take the exam for the first time. At the end of these workshops, the MPAQE will be administered, so there will be an opportunity to pass the test.
It is beneficial for students to attend all four of these intensive MPAQE writing workshops. Attending these workshops will definitely prepare you better to pass the MPAQE.
All of these workshops will be held in NB 1.100 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
Following is the schedule:
Monday, Jan. 13th. Intensive writing workshop-I
Tuesday, Jan. 14th. Intensive writing workshop-II
Wednesday, Jan. 15th. Intensive writing workshop-III
Thursday, Jan. 16th. Intensive writing workshop–IV

An Introduction to Simulation-Based Decision Making
Date: Tuesday, January 21st.
Room: NB 1.100
Time: from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
Use this link to RSVP: https://bit.ly/2ujE4ss
Description: This workshop is designed to provide students with an introduction to Policy Decision-Making with the Aid of Computer Simulations. Advanced technologies such as high-performance computing, artificial intelligence, and big data are changing the policymaking landscape by promoting better-informed decision-making. Computer simulation models are one of the new technologies that are available for decision-makers in the public and non-profit sectors. In this workshop, students will learn the on-going changes in public policy decision-making and gain a basic understanding of how computer simulation models can help decision-makers in the public and non-profit sectors solve “wicked” problems in diverse policy domains, from disaster management to public health, to global warming. The showcase of simulation-based decision making will also take place during the workshop.

Becoming a CPA– 150 Hour Rule and Beyond
Date: Wednesday, January 22nd.
Room: NB 1.100
Time: from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
Description: In this workshop, students will learn the requirements for becoming a CPA in New York State. There are some myths floating around about what the 150-Semester Hour Pathway to becoming a CPA is.
What students will learn in this workshop:
- Demystifying the 150-hour rule
- Planning your education to prepare for the future of work while meeting educational requirements to become a CPA
- Funding your way to become a CPA
This workshop will be interactive. Students will be given a few scenarios similar to actual students in the Fraud Examination and Financial Forensics program (FEFF) and be guided to come up with a plan to make the student meet the requirements.
A tip sheet will be provided to students so that they can make their own decisions along with their education and career journey.
Instructor: Prof. Iralma Pozo, CPA and Fraud Examination and Financial Forensics program (FEFF) instructor.
Techniques and Tools for Simulation-Based Decision Making
Date: Thursday, January 23rd.
Room: NB 1.100
Time: from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Description: This workshop is designed to provide students with an introduction to some of the tools and techniques used to simulate solutions to wicked problems. Students will receive hands-on experience with established computer simulation models that are used by practitioners to make a public policy decision in the real world. Example models will be used to demonstrate how technology can be used to project policy outcomes that derive from hypotheticals. Through the lab exercise, students will also learn how policy decision-makers can benefit from computer simulations to account for the known elements of a public problem.
